a novel (1850) by Charles Dickens. David, a boy in Victorian England, is sent to London for a life of hard work and poverty. He becomes a successful writer, but marries a childish woman, Dora, without realizing that another woman, Agnes, really loves him. Agnes's father is cheated out of his money by his employee, Uriah Heep, but in the end they are saved by David's friend Mr Micawber. Dora dies, and David marries Agnes. The novel is partly based on Dickens's own life.
