a BBC television science-fiction series made for older children and also popular with many adults. The main character is Doctor Who himself, who travels through time and space in a machine called the Tardis. In his adventures he fights many strange enemies, including the Daleks and the Cybermen. It was shown from 1963 to 1989 and a new series of programmes began in 2005. Many different actors have played Doctor Who, who as a so-called Time Lord is able to take on a new body and personality, for example when he is in a situation that would have killed a human being.
