a town in Dorset in southern England with a long history. Nearby Maiden Castle was occupied at least 4 000 years ago, and there was a Roman town, Durnovaria, where Dorchester now stands. In the 19th century, the Tolpuddle Martyrs were put on trial in Dorchester and the author Thomas Hardy was born there. In his novels the town is called Casterbridge.
