a novel (1816) by Jane Austen. The main character, a young woman called Miss Emma Woodhouse, believes that she knows what is best for everyone around her, particularly her friend Harriet Smith. Emma realizes how foolish she has been when Harriet seems to be falling in love with the man Emma herself loves. In the end both women marry happily.
