a popular sport in Britain in which greyhounds (= thin dogs that can run very fast) race around a circular track chasing an imitation hare (= animal like a large rabbit). People make bets on the races, and refer to the sport informally as 'the dogs'. The sport is also found in the US but is less popular there than in Britain.
