a large, fashionable and expensive department store (= shop where many types of goods are sold in different departments) in the Knightsbridge area of central London. It claims to be able to supply any article and provide any service. It began in 1849 as a small shop selling food, owned by Charles Henry Harrod. It was owned from 1985 - 2010 by Mohamed Al-Fayed and was then sold to Qatar Holdings.
