US land west of the Mississippi River to which Native Americans were forced to move in the 19th century. It was originally established for the Five Civilized Tribes, but other Native Americans were sent there in 1866. The Indian Territory existed from 1834 to 1890, but many white people settled there, and in 1907 most of it became part of the new state of Oklahoma.
