a short period of doing something or of behaving in a particular way, especially in a way that you cannot control a crying jag Word Origin late 16th cent. (originally meaning a bundle): of unknown origin. In the late 18th cent. the sense was ‘portion, quantity’, later ‘as much alcohol as one can hold’, hence ‘a binge’. The current sense dates from the early 20th cent.
