a place in Cheshire, north-west England, where there are several large radio telescopes (= devices for receiving radio waves from distant objects in the universe). The main one was designed by Sir Bernard Lovell, and when it began operating in 1957 it was the largest of its kind in the world. Jodrell Bank is part of the University of Manchester. Because of funding problems its future is not certain.
