(in Britain) a person who is learning to drive and has not yet passed the driving test. L-drivers may not drive without having a qualified driver with them and must display L-plates, square signs with a large red letter L on a white background, on the front and rear of the vehicle they are driving. Plates with the letter L or P in green are also available, to show that a driver has recently passed the driving test.
