a large chemical company that was started in St Louis in 1901 and is now one of the largest producers in the world of chemicals for use in agriculture. The products it has developed include artificial sweeteners for use in food production, Agent Orange and, in recent years, genetically modified agricultural products, which made the company the target of protests by environmental protest groups such as Greenpeace.
