an English company making pottery and porcelain (= hard, white, shiny material made by baking a type of fine clay). It was started in London in the early 19th century by John Doulton and his son Henry and later moved to Burslem near Stoke-on-Trent. The company is now part of WWRD Holdings Ltd and goods are still produced under the Royal Doulton brand.
