(1928-2014) the most famous and popular child star in the history of Hollywood. She was known for the curls in her hair and the dimples (= hollow places) in her cheeks. Her many films, in which she also danced and sang, included Curly Top (1935), Heidi (1937) and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1938). She was later, under her married name of Shirley Temple Black, an active Republican politician. She was appointed as a US representative to the United Nations (1969) and as ambassador (= senior government representative) to Ghana (1974-6) and Czechoslovakia (1989-92).
