(c. 1831-90) a leader of one of the Sioux peoples. He and Crazy Horse defeated General George Custer at the Battle of Little Bighorn. He then lived for a short time in Canada but agreed in 1881 to settle with his people on the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota, and in 1885 appeared in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. Because he encouraged the Sioux to keep the Ghost Dance religion, US soldiers and Native-American police tried to arrest him and he was killed.
