a northern central US state, also called the Coyote State and the Mount Rushmore State. The capital city is Pierre and the largest city is Sioux Falls. It was part of the Louisiana Purchase, and gold was discovered there in 1874. The Sioux fought white people who settled there, until they were defeated at Wounded Knee. The state grows wheat, maize/corn and sunflowers, and produces machinery and electronic equipment. Many tourists visit Mount Rushmore and the Badlands National Park.
