a large British company that makes sugar. In the 19th century it was one of the first companies to produce sugar in cubes, and became very successful as a result. One of its original owners, Henry Tate (1819-99), gave his collection of paintings to the nation and used some of his wealth to build the Tate Gallery, now Tate Britain.
