a US magazine, formerly called The Atlantic Monthly, known for its intelligent writing on culture and modern life. It is published in Boston, where it began in 1857 as a 'journal of literature, politics, science, and the arts'. It became famous for its reports on the American Civil War. Ernest Hemingway sold his first short story to the magazine in 1927.
