a stone monument in the middle of Whitehall, London, built in memory of the members of the armed forces who died in the two World Wars. Every year, on Remembrance Sunday, the Queen and the leaders of the main political parties place wreaths (= arrangements of flowers) there as part of a special ceremony. The word cenotaph means 'empty tomb'.
