The first was given to George Washington in 1776, and the singer Frank Sinatra received the 258th award in 1998. Others who have received it include John Wayne,Bob Hope , Walt Disney, George and Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Marian Anderson and Aaron Copland.
