a large US telescope put into space in 1990 by NASA. It is named after the US astronomer (= scientist who studies the stars, planets, etc.) Edwin Hubble and provides a much clearer view of the universe than could be obtained from the ground. Three months after it began to operate, it found a 'black hole' with a mass of 300 million suns.
