the British government official who formerly kept the seal (= a piece of metal used to stamp wax to show that documents are genuine) of the king or queen. Today the Lord Privy Seal no longer has this responsibility, but attends Cabinet meetings and may also be the Leader of the House of Commons or the Leader of the House of Lords.
