a committee responsible for advising the US President on matters of national security (= the protection of the nation and its interests) and defence policies. It was established by Congress in 1947. The President leads the committee's meetings, and other NSC members are the Vice-President, the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of the Treasury, and the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs. They are advised by, among others, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Director of National Intelligence.
