any of several awards given each year by New York theatre critics (= newspaper and magazine writers who give their opinions about plays performed). The awards were first given for the 1935-36 season by members of the New York Drama Critics Circle. Winning plays have included Three Tall Women (1993-94) by Edward Albee and Arcadia (1994-95) by Tom Stoppard.
