the traditional name for the Native American peoples who once lived on the Great Plains in the western central US. They often fought each other and the white people who settled on their land. They include the Arapaho, Blackfoot, Cheyenne, Comanche, Crow and Sioux. Many now live on western reservations (= land given and protected by the US government).
