  1. 1a British magazine, published once a month and containing articles about upper-class and upper-middle-class social events, fashion and the arts. It was first published in 1901.
  2. 2a magazine written by Richard Steele and Joseph Addison from 1709 to 1711. It was published three times a week and consisted of long articles about a wide range of subjects, written with intelligence and humour, and usually from a Whig point of view.
