The French settled there first in the 17th century, and Vermont became a state in 1791. It produces different types of stone, including granite and marble, and other products include electrical equipment, paper, furniture and maple syrup (= a sweet, sticky sauce produced from a type of maple tree). Tourist attractions in Vermont include the Green Mountain National Forest and the Bennington Battle Monument.
