a science fiction novel (1898) by H G Wells. It is about an attack on Earth by creatures from the planet Mars. The creatures have powerful weapons and technology, but are finally killed by Earth's bacteria. A famous US radio version of the story, broadcast in 1938 by Orson Welles, caused great fear because people thought that the attack was actually happening.
