Both Britain and the US occupied the land in the first half of the 19th century. Washington became part of the Oregon Territory in 1848 and a state in 1889. Its products include wood, paper, apples and fish, and it has a large aerospace industry. Tourist attractions include Mount Rainier, Mount St Helens and Seattle's Pacific Science Center and Space Needle.
