the name of a married couple who were important figures in socialist politics in Britain during the late 19th and early 20th century. Sidney Webb (1859-1947) and his wife Beatrice Webb (1858-1943) wrote several books together which had a great influence on political thought at the time. These included The History of Trade Unionism (1894) and Industrial Democracy (1897). Together they helped to establish the London School of Economics and the New Statesman magazine.
