an area of factories and warehouses next to the Leeds and Liverpool canal in Wigan. It was a centre for industry in the 19th century when goods were transported by canal and has now become a popular tourist attraction. It was also made famous by George Orwell's book The Road to Wigan Pier about the difficult conditions of working-class life in the 1930s.
