a leading US company in the production of radio and television equipment, first established in 1918. Its full name was the Zenith Electronics Corporation. For many years it used the advertising phrase, 'the quality goes in before the name goes on'. It made the world's first portable radio (= one that is easy to carry), the first practical television remote control device (= one that operates a television from a distance, using electronic signals), and the first digital high-definition television system.
