a large port and industrial city in south-west England, on the river Avon. It was an important port in the slave trade in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the 1990s local pop groups such as Massive Attack and Portishead became famous all over the world and their style of music, trip hop, is sometimes called the 'Bristol sound'.
