He became widely known and admired in Britain as a result of his two journeys to the Antarctic. On the second journey (1910-12) he reached the South Pole a month after the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen (1872-1928) had become the first man ever to reach it. Scott and his four companions died of cold on the journey back. His records of the journey were found in 1912 and published in 1913. His son was Peter Scott. see also Captain Oates,
