the abbreviation for ‘Citizens’ Band’ (a range of waves on a radio on which people can talk to each other over short distances, especially when driving) A truck driver used his CB radio to call for help. Culture CB first became popular in the US in the 1970s as a way of exchanging warnings about traffic problems and police. It was illegal in Britain until 1981. CB users give themselves unusual radio names, such as 'Hound Dog' and 'Sweet Mama'.
