(1839-76) a US general who first became famous for his wild courage fighting for the Union during the American Civil War. He was proud of his appearance and his long fair hair. From 1868, he fought the Cheyenne and the Sioux, until he and all his soldiers were killed by them at the Battle of Little Bighorn. This battle is sometimes called Custer's Last Stand.
