a US car company that is among the largest in the world, based in Detroit. It produces among others Chevrolet, Cadillac and Buick cars, and Vauxhall cars in Britain. The company was established in 1908 by William Durant. In 2009 it went bankrupt but continued to trade with the help of the US Treasury.
