(1924-) the 41st US President (1989-93) and a member of the Republican Party. He was twice the Vice-President under Ronald Reagan (1981-89). Bush was popular after the Gulf War was won in 1991, but lost support during America's later economic problems. He was defeated by Bill Clinton in the election of 1992. His son, George W Bush, became President in 2001.
