a region and former administrative county of south-east Wales. Its cities and many of its towns and their surrounding areas are now governed by separate unitary authorities: Cardiff, Swansea, Bridgend, Caerphilly and Merthyr Tydfil. The northern part has many mountains and until the 1980s, was known especially for its coal, iron and steel industries. The southern part, now governed by the Vale of Glamorgan unitary authority, is known for its agriculture and beautiful coastline. Glamorgan County Cricket Club, whose ground is in Cardiff, is the only Welsh club in the county championship.
