a former British company, originally called Great Universal Stores, which started as a business selling goods through mail order catalogues (= books sent to people's homes showing items that can be ordered by post). In 2006 the company was divided into two separate companies, the Home Retail Group and Experian, which provides information to businesses worldwide.
