Independent Television (a group of British companies that produce programmes that are paid for by advertising) Culture ITV, or Channel 3, is a network of 15 regional television channels in Britain which, unlike the BBC, show advertising. 12 of these channels are owned by ITV plc which was formed in 2004 from a number of smaller companies which previously owned the channels. ITV is controlled by Ofcom. ITV was originally started as Independent Television in 1955, as a commercial alternative to the BBC.
