(1908-97) a popular US actor who usually played good, honest characters. He was a tall man, known for speaking in a slow and hesitating way. He won an Oscar for The Philadelphia Story (1940) and a special Oscar in 1984 for his contribution to the film industry. His other films include It's a Wonderful Life, Rear Window (1954), The Glenn Miller Story (1954), The Man from Laramie (1955), The Spirit of St Louis (1957) and The Shootist (1986). Stewart was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in World War II and was later a Brigadier General in the US Air Force Reserve.
