a department of local government in Britain that is in charge of the state schools and colleges in its area. Some of the schools and colleges in the area of any local authority, however, are given money directly by central government and are no longer in the control of local government. The term Local Education Authority is no longer in official use, but it is still sometimes used informally to refer to the department of a local authority that deals with education.
