a zoo (= place where wild animals are kept for the public to see them) in Regent's Park, London, England. It was established in 1826 by the Zoological Society of London. Today the zoo is an important centre for the study of animals, and breeds animals that are in danger of disappearing in their native environments. Another branch of the zoo is at Whipsnade.
