(1901-92) a US film actress and singer, born in Germany. She was known for her deep voice and beautiful legs. She first became famous in Germany in The Blue Angel (1930), directed by Josef von Sternberg. They both went to Hollywood where he directed her in such films as Blonde Venus (1932) and The Scarlet Empress (1934). Her later films included Witness for the Prosecution (1957) and Judgment at Nuremberg (1961).
