a state in the northern central US on the Canadian border. It has more than 10 000 lakes, and is also called the North Star State and the Gopher State. The largest city is Minneapolis and the capital city is St Paul. It became a state in 1858. Minnesota produces 75% of the country's iron ore (= rock), as well as agricultural products, machinery and computers. The Mayo Clinic, a famous medical centre, is in Rochester. Tourists visit Voyageurs National Park and the St Paul Winter Carnival.
