the first major US film (1993) about the disease AIDS. Tom Hanks won an Oscar as Best Actor, and Bruce Springsteen received one for his song Streets of Philadelphia. In the film Hanks plays a homosexual (= a person who is sexually attracted to others of his own sex) with AIDS who is dismissed from work and begins a legal case against his employer. The film created a lot of debate in America about equal rights for people with AIDS.
