an international company, based in Britain but now owned by the Japanese Nippon Sheet Glass Company, that makes many different types of glass. The company has produced glass since the early 19th century, but it became well known in 1959 when Alastair Pilkington invented a new way of making flat glass by floating it on metal that has been heated until it becomes liquid.
