a novel (1813) by Jane Austen. Its main characters are the sensible and intelligent Elizabeth Bennet and the rich and handsome Fitzwilliam Darcy. Elizabeth at first dislikes Darcy because of his pride, but they finally recognize each other's good qualities and fall in love. The book ends with their marriage and that of another couple, Elizabeth's sister Jane and Darcy's friend Charles Bingley. It is one of Austen's most popular books and has been filmed several times.
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.
