a popular US television series for young children. The programmes, which combine education and teaching social values with entertainment, began in 1969 and are now shown in many different countries. They include real actors and the Muppet Show characters created by Jim Henson, such as Bert and Ernie, Big Bird, the Cookie Monster, Kermit the Frog and Oscar the Grouch. There are also many international versions of the show, which use the same educational approach as the original.
