a town in Fife, Scotland. It is named after St Andrew, whose bones are said to have been brought here in the 4th century, and it was an early centre of the Christian Church. Its university, established in 1412, is the oldest in Scotland. The town is also famous for the Royal and Ancient golf club, which is recognized as an international authority on the rules of golf.
